Jersey City tenants push to ban application fees for affordable housing

Affordable housing applicants in Jersey City say they’re being squeezed before they even move in and they want the city to step in. Tenants are pressing officials to eliminate application fees for affordable apartments, which can run anywhere from $30 to $150 per try, Gothamist reported. With hundreds of renters vying for just a handful of units, applicants spend hundreds of dollars only to walk away empty-handed.  The issue is landing squarely in the city’s heated mayoral race.
